Effective Strategies to Dealing with Migraines

MIGRAINE

Migraine is a neurological condition that can cause multiple symptoms. Characterized by intense debilitating headaches. Symptoms may include nausea vomiting, difficulty speaking, numbness or tingling and sensitivity of light and sound. Migraines often run in families and affect all ages. The most common categories of migraine headache are those without aura (common migraine) and those with aura (classic migraines). During an aura you may have problems with your vision, sensation, movement and speech, examples of these problems include difficulty speaking clearly, feeling a prickling or tingling sensation in your face, arms, or legs; seeing shapes, light flashes or bright spots; temporarily losing your vision.

In addition to herbal treatment, significant research shows that diet can play a major role in migraine frequency, duration and intensity. Potential preventive measures and treatments for migraines include- eating a low fat diet; eliminating or limiting foods that show lgG antibody production; improving gut flora content; eating consistently to minimize low blood sugar. TIPS AND ADVICE FOR MIGRAINE

Lavender Oil – You can vaporize and inhale the oil or apply directly to our skin. For the inhaling method put 2 to 4 drops for every 2 to 3 cups of boiling water. Breathe deep. Try applying to your temples and the back of your neck.

Light Exercise – Sitting watching the TV, looking at your Smartphone or sitting in your office chair for hour can put additional strain on your neck that can lead to some bad headaches. Taking a break at least once an hour but doesn’t just sit there-get up and do some stretching and roll your head in a circular motion. Also learning some Yoga poses helps to loosen your muscles.

Ice/Heat Compresses –A simple ice pack can help you ward off a migraine headache, as it offers a “numbing effect that alleviates pain”. Take a few ice cubes in a clean towel and apply it to your temples, forehead or back of your neck for 15 minutes at a time.

Scalp Massage – You can use essential oils – lavender is listed among them. Use “carrier oils” such as almond or coconut oil to dilute the essential oils before applying them. Apply the oils to the neck and shoulders for the aromatherapy benefits and with your partner on their back “Run the fingers of your other from the collar bone to the ear, starting with light pressure and gradually increasing pressure each stroke”, continuing in the same way for the side of the neck and back.

Magnesium

People, who suffer from serious headaches like migraines, often have low levels of magnesium. If you are diabetic or have heart disease or are on blood pressure medications, you may be extra prone to having low magnesium. Magnesium helps alleviate the associated “visual and sensory changes” that often come with migraines and can also help block pain transmitting chemicals in the brain.  It is suggested taking 200 to 600 milligrams of magnesium as a supplement or getting more naturally through beans, whole grains, nuts and leafy greens.
